ʿIlm al-Rijāl (the Science of Narrators) is a fundamental and specialized discipline in Islamic studies that evaluates the personal, moral, scholarly, and doctrinal conditions of hadith narrators. It holds essential importance in verifying the authenticity of the Prophetic Sunnah and identifying weak narrations. The aim of this study is to explain the key concepts of ʿIlm al-Rijāl, outline the standard principles for evaluating narrators, and clarify its necessity in the contemporary academic context. The research is based on an analytical-descriptive method and relies on the Qur’an, the Prophetic Sunnah, and classical sources of hadith sciences. The findings indicate that ʿIlm al-Rijāl is an indispensable foundation for ensuring the authenticity of hadith, the validity of juristic reasoning, and the intellectual stability of Islamic thought; therefore, its teaching and promotion are considered essential.
